July 22nd, 2014 | EarthBound, MOTHER 1

H.S has posted some new screenshots from the upcoming hack that recreated MOTHER 1 using the EarthBound ROM, and they’re looking really good! These ones showcase some of the enemies as they’ll appear in their proper areas of the game!

Amazing stuff, as always!

I hope they kept the secret message from Itoi in the desert!

Really hope this gets finished, I’ve been saving another playthrough of Mother for this!

Wow, it’s been quite a while since anyone’s talked about this! I’m looking forward to its release!

Also, about the secret message from Itoi in the Advent Desert, I’d like to see the developers add their own little P.S. note after Itoi’s message. It’d be quite interesting!

You know what’d be really awesome? If they actually made a reproduction cart so that you could actually play the game on the SNES!

Holy Hack in a Sack!

This looks amazing! I checked the thread a few times times before (As a guest) and the old EB Central posts related to this project while thinking “Wow, I can’t wait to play this!”

Hehe, I have the feeling that I’ll be able to play this real soon! 😀

Keep the great work, H.S!

Very excited about this. Have never been able to immerse myself in the original. This game, however, looks very promising.

Woo, Hip Snake! …I can’t help reading H.S. as Hip Snake. It’s a TWEWY thing… anyway!

Mother

This looks so cool! Even though NES Mother was pretty advanced for an NES game, there’s something about it that just kinda turns me off to it… the random battles and completely open-world format, perhaps? But seeing the game being redone using EB as a base is just exciting somehow. Maybe I didn’t like it because it felt so empty! Now the enemies will be visible all over the place… No more barren wastelands!

Snake? Snake? Snaaaaake!

The best part about this sort of project is the removal of some outdated gameplay annoyances like random encounters.

Not to besmirch Mother 1’s good name or anything, but I’d say we’re coming up on the definitive version of the game. I kind of like how Ninten and co. look all stocky and pudgy compared to EB’s protagonists. Can’t wait to play this!

I admire the dedication that’s going into this. I imagine it’s quite an undertaking.

Been following this for awhile, and am happy to see it coming along so nicely.

I usually never play hacks but this is one I will love to play when its done.

I’m so excited for this. As a millennial I never could appreciate the art of having to
actually *work* at getting stronger in an RPG. I just kept getting my butt kicked and it’s all the stupid game’s fault for being so primitive. I mean would it have killed them to actually let you SEE the enemies? And what’s with all the walking? Ugh. I just want to able to take a bus from town to town. I’m glad someone is finally shaping this archaic mess into the 16-bit RPG I always needed it to be in order to get into it. Because who needs a challenge anyway?

I’m really excited for this!! Even though I already love MOTHER as it is, it’ll be nice to experience it all over again with the updated graphics, sound, and battle mechanics! I just hope they have an option where it can be the same difficulty as the original.

Off topic, but Yahtzee Croshaw just posted his weekly Zero Punctuation game review, which some of you might recognize:

I really like this. My thoughts:

-Are Earthbound’s resources being used? You know, so you don’t invent the wheel twice, so to speak? It can always be changed to use more original music, sprites, etc. after the initial release can’t it?

-How is the title screen going? I’ve seen mock ups and even hacks that change EB’s title to “Mother”, but it was always buggy. It seems changing the title screen is more difficult on EB than it is on other games, because on RHDN, title hacks are always sort of presented as really minor touch ups…so to speak.

I remember discovering this hack a while ago, And it definitely shows Pertential! well I may always prefer the original, this hack will definitely help people who can’t stand MOTHER have a more enjoyable experience.

Really pumped for this. Sadly I never got into the original Mother, mostly because it felt extremely tedious walking everywhere.
I like that the remake seems to be a bit compressed. I really look forward to the release of this 🙂

As someone who played EarthBound Zero to the very end, I

For real though, this hack is looking very good. I’ve seen H.S.’s other hacks, and he obviously has a lot of skill. If he isn’t doing it already, he should put that skill towards making original games which he could sell himself. I know I wouldn’t want to waste it all on hacking a game released two decades ago.

Eartbound Zero better come on virtual console before this comes out or i’ll be forced to get this.

I’m actually quite excited by this, much more than any other fan hacks or projects lately – for any games. It’s like being back in the 90s, seeing a SNES game like this, and the quality looks very professional. I wonder if people will actually put it in Mother game compilations like the one we saw for the Wii. Keep up the good work!

This looks pretty cool. I do have the rom file for the nes emulator but if the random encounters are anything like the original final fantasy idk if i wanna play it like that. But if this one isn’t going to be as bad then I’d gladly wait to play it.

I really like MOTHER 1, especially the story, but it was always so punishingly difficult. Now it will be WAY more accessible to players!

Happy 25th Birthday to a game meant for a generation of gamers who appreciated having to work to be strong enough to progress in it! A game that even Shigeru Miyamoto, a man who professes that he’s only average at video games, was able to complete and is a fan of!

I really don’t like this. Mother should be Mother, EarthBound is EarthBound, and Mother 3 is Mother 3. Don’t try mixing them up. Itoi would say the same.

Also, why does Ninten have blue, white and red stripes? He’s supposed to be blue and yellow! And what’s up with that stupid handkerchief? He never had that on artwork or in-game.

Why do people call this game EarthBound 0? What’s so “zero” about it? Just call it Mother or Mother 1. I’ve always called EarthBound Mother 2, you know.

I agree with Mother123. I know that U.S Mother series fans like to call the first and third Mother game Earthbound Zero/ Two, but that isn’t the real name for those games. I call Mother 1 and 3 Mother 1 and 3! I call Mother 2 both Earthbound and mother 2, depending on the situation I’m discussing in a conversation. It would be nice if others would do the same.

Is the music going to be remastered? The only reason I even mention the first Mother game is because I like some of the music and the fact that Giygas is in it. Other than that, my main interest is in Mother 2 and 3. I would play the first game if they redid it, and now that I see this being done, I’ll give the game a try. Hopefully, I don’t regret making this decision. 😀

@MysterySprite22: “Is the music going to be remastered?” Yes, the game will have remixed music from the NES version.

Seriously, I can’t believe they have so many areas to showcase. It truly give me hype.

@Mother123

It’s from the Mother 1 commercial in japan. Ever since, most of the fanbase has depicted Ninten with his handy handkerchief, while his colors vary. There really is no reason for Ninten to look exactly like Ness when M2 is confirmed to be a direct sequel to M1. The shirt helps differentiate.

This is looking utterly fantastic. I really hope this hack gets completed and can’t wait until that day.

I recently gave MOTHER 1 another try and just could not keep myself at it. Even though I was playing the M1+2 translation on original hardware and felt like I was finally gonna play all the way through this time… the monotony got the best of me and I put the game down and just never picked it back up. Ugh, every time. 😐

This hack would be just the sort of thing to get me into the mode of finally finishing M1. I’m too fond of the EB graphics to not play through the whole thing in one sitting.

hey is earthbound zero hack almost done I just wanted to ask I am not rushing you I just wanted to ask?

I’m going to love this hack. so what improvements did you put on their, or did you already completed this project….sorry I just wanted to know if its completed or not

For anyone who’s asking how this hack is goin’ check the forum page here…
